After visiting Chiang Mai a couple of times, I can happily share it is one of my favourite places to visit in Thailand. Not only is it the cultural capital of Northern Thailand and is full of history and natural beauty, it is nestled alongside beautiful lush jungles, offering so many opportunities to engage with Thai culture and nature. Here are my top 5 activities in Chiang Mai that you shouldn’t miss on your next trip…

1. Visit Wat Phra That Doi Suthep

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is one of Chiang Mai’s most iconic Budhist Temples that sits on Doi Suthep Mountain. This stunning temple offers breathtaking 360 views of the city.

As with all Temples, make sure you dress respectfully by covering your shoulders and knees. To reach this temple, you have to climb the 306 steps of the Naga Serpent Staircase.

2. Take a Trip to an Elephant Sanctuary

Visiting an Elephant Sanctuary is a must in Chiang Mai. Elephant sanctuaries offer you the opportunity to see rescued elephants, giving you the chance to observe and interact with these incredible creatures in a humane environment.

This was one of my highlights from my last visit to Chiang Mai and it is such a special experience interacting with these majestic animals. You can opt for half-day or full-day visits to engage with the elephants.

3. Experience a Muay Thai Fight

Muay Thai, Thailand’s national sport, is a culturally rich experience. Chiang Mai hosts several Muay Thai stadiums where you can watch live matches.

The bouts are intense and showcase the skill and discipline of the fighters. It’s an exciting way to spend an evening and immerse yourself in Thai culture.

4. Hike to Doi Inthanon National Park

For nature lovers and hikers, like myself, a trip to Doi Inthanon National Park is a must. This park offers various hiking trails and stunning waterfalls which you can swim in. We opted to go with a guide and it was one of the best days we spent in Chiang Mai.

5. Try Michelin Rated Khao Soi

If you are looking for a dish that is rich, slightly spicy but so moreish, then you have to try Khao Soi. This dish originates in Chiang Mai and there is an array of Michelin rated Khao Soi restaurants you can try. You may be worried that it is out of your budget being Michelin rated, but, I managed to grab a bowl of Khao Soi for £1.30.

Chiang Mai, Thailand gives you a totally different side of Thai culture that you cannot find anywhere else in Thailand. If you want a place that offers a blend of cultural experiences, outdoor adventures, and opportunities for relaxation, then make sure to add Chiang Mai to your future Thailand Itinerary.
